We need to pick up points at Brunton Park, says Carlisle Utd ace Kavanagh

Veteran player-coach Graham Kavanagh admits Carlisle United are still in danger of being dragged into the relegation mire.

Kavanagh has warned his team-mates not to think they are in a comfort zone just because they are nine points clear of the relegation places.

The 36-year-old midfielder, who was recalled to the side for Tuesday night’s 3-1 defeat to Millwall, is desperate to avoid a repeat of last season’s final day drama when Carlisle had to defeat the Lions to secure their League One status.

Kavanagh told News & Star Sport: “We are still trying to secure our safety in the division.

“People can look and say we are nine points clear, but we’re not safe, we know we’re not, and we’re not going to rest on our laurels.”

However, the former Republic of Ireland international reckons the Blues can take plenty of heart from the midweek defeat as they prepare for Saturday’s visit of Colchester United to Brunton Park.

He said: “Millwall are a good side, one of the more powerful, organised teams in the league, and extremely fit all over the park.

“They are a very good outfit and i can definitely see them making the play-offs.

“We have to take the positives because we are coming into a tough run of games.

“Colchester is a game we want to win. We need to be picking up points at home.”
