Man 'went beyond self-defence' in attack on Carlisle girlfriend - court

A man who kicked his girlfriend in retaliation after she attacked him has been told he is not likely to go to prison.
A judge at Carlisle Crown Court told Richard Rodgers he would probably receive some sort of community punishment, depending on whether probation officers thought he needed “help, punishment or both”.
Rodgers, 34, who has no fixed address and has been living recently at the John Street hostel in Carlisle, pleaded guilty to causing actual bodily harm to 26-year-old Susan Welch.
The court heard he injured her while reacting to her attack on him.
“It went beyond self defence,” prosecutor Gerard Rogerson said.
Ms Welch, who lives in Partridge Place, Carlisle, was in the public gallery and left the court with Rodgers when he was remanded on bail for background reports.
He will be sentenced on April 7.
