Two of Colchester United’s legion of former Carlisle players will miss a return to Brunton Park on Saturday.

Defender Paul Reid is again sidelined for Aidy Boothroyd’s side after a month out with a calf injury.

Reid, who would have been certain of a starting place if he was fit, has been beset by niggling injuries since recovering from a broken kneecap.

There will also be no return for winger Simon Hackney, who has joined League Two outfit Morecambe on a month’s loan after falling out of favour with Boothroyd.

The 26-year-old former Blues favourite has made 35 appearances for the Us since joining from Carlisle in a £100,000 deal last year, but has not featured since the 7-0 FA Cup defeat by Preston in January.

Hackney is expected to go straight into the Morecambe squad for Saturday’s home clash with Grimsby.

Goalkeeper Ben Williams and defender Marc Tierney will return to Brunton Park, along with Colchester No2 John Ward, sacked as United boss in 2008.

Midfielder Kem Izzet is set to be a key absentee after admitting he took “one for the team” after being hit with a two-match ban.

But the long-serving Colchester midfielder picked up his tenth booking of the season in the Us’ 0-0 draw against Brighton and Hove Albion after bringing down former Carlisle striker Glenn Murray.

Had Izzet not made the challenge just before half-time, Murray could easily have had a clear run at goal.

Now he will have to sit out Colchester’s forthcoming away trips to Carlisle and Walsall.

Izzet said: “I knew I was there or thereabouts with nine bookings and that if I picked up another one, I would be out.”
