Two giants of the Cumbrian business scene, from opposite ends of the county’s commercial spectrum, are in the running for a lifetime achievement award at the CN Group Business Awards 2009.
Nick Utting, senior group secretary of the National Farmers’ Union (NFU) and Mike Smith, managing director of engineering training firm Gen II will battle for the prize.
Mr Utting is the face of Cumbria’s traditional rural economy, while Mr Smith is one of the key figures in the west coast’s cutting-edge nuclear and engineering sector.
Mr Utting has served the rural community for 40 years.
He acts as a local point of contact for the farming community while also offering guidance and advice on the issues affecting the industry.
He is also secretary of Dalston Show and is involved with groups and committees including the Life Education Unit, Cumbria Society, Blamire Trust, Dick Harrison Trust, Hadrian’s Wall Path, the Cumberland Show and the FMD Stakeholder Group.
His nominee, NFU group secretary Nick Mandle, says of Mr Utting: “Without question, Nick continues to be a highly respected leader and spokesperson for the farming community in north Cumbria.”
Mr Smith has contributed to the advancement of skills and education in Cumbria for 26 years.
His leadership, devotion and commitment has helped give career paths to thousands of people as well as offering a vital service for local businesses.
The success of Gen II is due in no small part to Mr Smith’s vision, energy and understanding of education and skills.
The company recruited 45 apprentices in 2000 on behalf of two employers.
It has grown in strength in 2009 approximately 200 apprentices will be offered places.
The winner will be announced at a ceremony at Rheged, Penrith, on October 22, with guest speaker, Shadow Chancellor George Osborne.
The main sponsor is Invest in Cumbria.
