Carlisle fans turn out to see Johnstone’s Paint Trophy

Scores of Carlisle United fans turned out to see the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy yesterday - in the hope that it won’t be the last time.

The trophy was on show at the Lanes shopping centre in Carlisle ahead of United’s cup tie with Southampton at Wembley on March 28.

Fans were given the chance to pose for pictures with the silverware, given mini footballs and the chance to enter a prize draw to win one of ten pairs of tickets.

David Gaffney, 28, from Raffles took his nine-month-old daughter Caitlin along to see the trophy.

He said: “I am from Manchester originally but have become a Carlisle United fan since moving to the city. I wanted to bring Caitlin along to see it too.”

David won’t be travelling to Wembley but will cheer on the Blues from home.

One fan who is counting down the days to the final is Dean Lambert, 21, from Oswald Street off London Road. He turned up to see the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy with pregnant girlfriend Danielle O’Shaughnessy, 18.

He said: “I am really hoping the trophy will be making its way back to Carlisle after the final. I wanted to come down and see it today but hopefully it won’t be the last time.”

Alan Shaw, 18, from Wigton Road, added: “The trophy looks brilliant up close. I wanted to see it for my own eyes. I am looking forward to seeing it with the Carlisle ribbons on it.”
